This will usually pop up when you build your project, but you can also select it from the View menu. Figure 38-6 shows part of the output from applying the Microsoft All Rules set to Listing 38-7.

Compiling scripts can also be done from files, or more specifically, from Reader strings. Compilation is most beneficial for both large code blocks and those that execute repeatedly.

The results of code analysis Not all the detail from the code analysis output will fit into a printed page, but if you run the analysis yourself, you will see that the output includes details of where each rule violation has been found and in which file. You can see that there is a lot of repetition in the errors shown in Figure 38-6. This is pretty common for some kinds of rule because programmers, me included, tend to write groups of methods together, cookie-cutter style, and so one rule violation tends to be repeated several times. For example, the first example of rule CA1822 tells me that the CalculateDivision method in the Calculator class doesn t refer to any instance variables and that I should make the method static to improve performance. CA1822 is part of the Microsoft.Performance group of rules that are focused on improving performance. The next three violations are the same rule, reported for the CalculateProduct, CalculateSubtraction, and CalculateSum methods.

You have some choices when code analysis shows you have broken a rule. The obvious thing to do is to change the code. There really is no good reason why the methods in the Calculator class shouldn t be static, so I can go ahead and make the change shown by Listing 38-8. Listing 38-8. So the Web is basically off limits for most people for most of the working day The same thing is true in the evening You can sit down at your computer in the evening, and millions do just that But what most people are doing is reading their email or playing computer games Only a few spend much time sur ng commercial Web sites It is an exhausting and boring experience after the rst week or so So the Web cannot be an active medium, blasting ads at people The people are not watching Web sites are passive; they are active only when.

If I run the analysis again, I don t see CA1822 errors anymore. But it isn t always possible, or desirable, to change the code. There might be a good reason why a piece of code is written a certain way. It might work around a bug, and it might be a placeholder for future work that, once completed, will conform to the rule. Or you might like to change the code, but you can t perhaps it is a legacy code base or it belongs to another team that works on a different schedule than you (this is often the case with shared components such as billing systems and general ledgers). These situations fall into two broad categories. You don t want to change a particular area of code, but you are interested in seeing other violations of the same type elsewhere in your project. Or, a rule just doesn t apply to you at all, and you don t ever want to see it reported again.
